Why Was the Battle of Midway Important?
The Battle of Midway was important for 3 main reasons. One is that it was America's first battle won against Japan. Without any wins morale was very low for the Americans and defeating the Japanese fleet seemed unlikely. Japan had complete naval superiority over America before the battle. They chose when and where to attack and left us on the definsive constantly, but afterwards Japan lost 4 of its main carriers in just one day. This evened out our navy's and soon lead us to being on the offensive and eventually won us the war.
The second reason why the Battle of Midway was important is because it defended our main refueling station in the pacific besides Hawaii. If Midway was not properly defended it could have easily been taken out. Without Midway we couldn't launch long range attacks in the pacific and Japan would have a easier time taking over the rest of the pacific. We would be pushed further back and if the rest of Japans plans had followed through America could have possibly been forced into surrender, or attacked at pearl harbor again.
The third reason is because Americas supierior intelligence was shown by being able to decode Japans upcoming attack. Americans had tried for a very long time to decode the Japanese JN-25 code prior to1942 with only 10-15% of it ever being figured out. As more of the code was deciphered American forces were waiting for a sign to where Japan was going to strike next. Finnaly they found out that Japan was going to make a move on the target "AF". There was a educated guess that Midway was "AF" but to be sure a message was sent out saying that Midway was low on water. Shortly afterwards a code was deciphered from Japan saying AF was short of water, Americans knew the next move was,Midway.
